The Orpheus Fund

1 Day Ranch of Shawnee, OK is one of the more well known rescues in Oklahoma, thanks in part to the publicity they got after their founder became the face of disaster animal rescue following the May 19th, 2013 tornadoes. The tornadoes also tore apart their very own grounds. Workers of the rescue are, of course, no stranger to loss, not only because of the damage sustained through the tornado, but also because they tirelessly work to rescue as many animals as possible. They are also well known for taking in extremely difficult cases, including severe emaciation cases. (You can read more about past cases on 1 Day Ranch's Facebook Page).

The animal rescue recently took in an extremely difficult case... On July 27th, OKC Animal Welfare was brought an extremely emaciated Great Dane who had been dumped at Draper Lake. He was found lying in the weeds, unable to stand or walk. 1 Day Ranch was immediately asked to take him in an attempt to save him. He was immediately taken to Neel Veterinary Hospital for treatment, and dubbed "Orpheus". On July 28th, he was starting to improve. Though he did have parasites (including heartworms) and was VERY dehydrated and severely emaciated, he was urinating, eating, "talking", and even sat up. However, sweet Orpheus' body had just been through too much, and early in the morning of July 29th, his blood pressure dropped and he experienced massive organ failure. Just before 3am, he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

In Orpheus' memory, 1 Day Ranch has created a fund that they are calling "The Orpheus Fund" which will go towards supporting their needs when accepting severe emaciation cases, and will allow them to save more animals like Orpheus - animals that would not have any other chance of survival.
